The Times Abroad

Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

Three times a semester The Times Abroad is produced to aid our current students in settling into Australia and providing advice on what to do. We actively encourage articles from our students depicting their experiences and adventures. It also contains a wealth of information relevant to their stay in Australia, such as, the differences between the U.S. Academic system and the Australian system, events and articles on culture shock and even reverse culture shock.

Its our way of accelerating the students jump into their life in Australia. Students also receive access to the Current Students website which has over 100 webpages, 600 photos, every IFSA-Butler free event, and everything they ever need to know about IFSA-Butler Life in Australia.

The last edition of The Times Abroad

This Orientation Edition has a seemingly eclectic collection of articles.

However there is a significant theme running throughout the entire magazine, Firstly we provide an introduction to the Australian IFSA_Butler operation. Secondly, a few articles on some of the most important aspects which faces the students in their first few weeks in Australia. Thirdly some advice from prior students. Fourthly some recommendations on places to visit and lastly some of our student competitions.

Contents

  • Your Student Services Coordinator (SSC) is the place to start! After many semesters of looking after IFSA-Butler students they know almost everything.
  • If you need to know the fine print about work and volunteering this article is the place to start, remember its only 20hrs a week which you can work/volunteer in total.
  • Several ex-students and one returning student share their perspectives on how to settle into the next six months of your life
  • We do have one important idea to mention, and that is the academic difference between here and your U.S. system, if you think of it as the Matrix it will begin to make sense.
  • Finally we list the places that the SSC recommend to visit and the various events which the cities are holding in the next few months.
  • We have also included a few competitions for you, Photo, TShirt, and if you want to blog then I'm more than happy to pay you to do so.
